The secrets of filtration

In a swimming pool, the heart that pumps the water throughout the installation is the water pump. Thanks to the water pump all cleaning and disinfection chemicals pass through the kidneys of the pool, i.e. the filters. Filters are responsible for keeping the water clean and sparkling, as their job is to trap all impurities. In this post we will talk about this device so necessary for the pool and how to take care of it so that it always works perfectly.

Sand filters
When we start up the pool water filter and put it in wash mode, we observe how little by little the turbidity of the water begins to decrease little by little. We can opt for a sand filter as well as a cartridge, diatomaceous or monoblock filter. Sand filters have a cyclic operation whose duration depends on the speed that we give to the filtration, the granulometry of the filtering bed, the thickness of the layer and how clean is the water of our pool.

Once the impurities filtration stage is finished and the turbidity shows a stable value, the filtration cycle is finished and the cycle clogging has started. The clogging is controlled by pressure gauges. So, now that we understand how the washing cycle of sand filters works, we can learn how to wash these filters. To perform the washing we need to start the water cycle against the current with about 30 to 40 m/h of water flow.

Diatomaceous earth filters
Diatomaceous earth filters are powered by single-celled marine plants. Diatomaceous earth filters can contain a particle size between 14 and 45 microns. These filters work through the force of the pressure, its way of filtering is at a slow speed and it is very effective. However, it is very important to avoid using coagulants, since we would clog the filter before finishing the filtering cycle. In addition, we will need the water pump pressure to be much stronger than that used in the sand filter.

Cartridge filters
The cartridge filter also works under pressure and works thanks to the cartridges, which work in vertical arrangement. Cartridges are filter elements made of cellulose or synthetic fibers that are highly resistant to water pressure. When these filters are full of dirt we can simply wash it or change it for a new one. However, since it has a lower filtration rate, we only recommend this filter for smaller pools.
